"You ought to realize we are only women, not meant in nature to fight against men, and that we are ruled, by those who are stronger, to obedience in this and even more painful matters" (lines 70-74).
What is the view on women/ their role? How does this view effect Ismene and Antigone's actions?
Great question Kristen! I feel as though women are often regarded as lesser then men in antigone. Ismene doesn't want to disobeye this law that men should be superior to women. Antigone on the other hand wants to defy this and the state, and be a strong independent woman. ❤ youuuu
ReplyDeleteIsn't it interesting also that Sophocles DOES use women in key roles here? What does his portrayal of women say about his society? Does Sophocles seem to agree with Creon's assessment of women? I note that there are more women's roles in Antigone than there are in Beowulf that the other seniors are reading now (two there, and one is a monster!).
